David Brooks

David Brooks (b. Canberra, 1953) is a poet, short-fiction writer, novelist, photographer, essayist and currently Associate Professor of Australian Literature at the University of Sydney. He is also co-editor of Southerly, the premier journal of Australian Literature and new Australian writing. He first met A.D. Hope in 1972, and shortly thereafter was asked to photograph him for an installation at the A.D. Hope building at the Australian national University. A friendship developed that lasted for a quarter century, during which time Brooks edited Hope's Selected Poems (1991), Selected Poetry and Prose (2000), The Double Looking Glass (a volume of essays on Hope's work, 2000), and other festschrifts and collections of Hope's poetry. Brooks' own poetry and prose have been widely translated and anthologised. His second novel, The Fern Tattoo, was short-listed for the 2008 Miles Franklin Award. His most recent publications are a collection of poetry, The Balcony (UQP, 2008) and The Golden Boat, a selection of poems of Srečko Kosovel (‘the Slovenian Rimbaud’) which he translated with the Slovenian/Australian poet Bert Pribac (SALT, U.K., 2008).
